The IT Services team operates the IT infrastructure and related services at the EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg and at the laboratory’s sites in Barcelona and Rome. IT is considered to be the fundamental tool for modern scientific research and the importance is recognised by the scientific community at EMBL.

The Network team is a member of the IT Services department and is responsible for daily operations and future development of the networking infrastructure in our Campus, including multiple Data Centers. Scientific operations of EMBL require high volume data flows between scientific equipment and the Data Centers in our six different sites. EMBL is connected to the national and international scientific networks using multiple high throughput connections. We use up-to-date, high performance hardware from vendors such as Extreme Networks, Cisco and Fortinet.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Network Engineer to join our team on-site at the headquarters in Heidelberg. EMBL offers the opportunity for continuous technical training and learning while working with the highly competent and experienced IT Services team.

Your role

  • Operate, monitor and troubleshoot the network infrastructure at multiple EMBL sites
  • Manage routers, switches, wlan access points and other network components
  • Set-up physical network connectivity for i.e. scientific instruments
  • Participate in the decision making of the future network technologies and their lifecycle
  • Work closely with suppliers and support providers to ensure stable operation and further development of our network infrastructure
  • Explore and evaluate the latest networking technologies 
  • Collaborate with the Network and IT teams across all EMBL sites
  • Maintain good quality and up-to-date technical documentation

You have

  • A degree in computer science and/or equivalent professional experience
  • Technical certifications or professional experience for Extreme Networks and Cisco 
  • Good understanding of networking technologies regarding OSI layers 1-4
  • The ability to work in a self-motivated team and participate in technical decision making
  • A customer-oriented personality and excellent communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of English
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, mostly to other EMBL sites

You might also have

  • Interest in topics such as advanced redundancy, virtual networking, software defined networking, network access control and zero-trust security model
  • Proficiency in German is desirable
