The Literature services team comprises 20 people and runs Europe PMC, a database of research publications. This encompasses ~45M records, made up of the abstracts and full text of research articles, preprints, and other documents. The Europe PMC website receives millions of visitors per month and increasing amounts of data is downloaded programmatically via the open APIs and bulk download options.

Europe PMC has set trends in the adoption of new infrastructure developments such as ORCID integration, data integration with publications, and preprints discovery and indexing. The Literature Services team also conducts text and data mining of content, which is available to users via API and the front end display.

We are now looking for a Product Manager to oversee the various streams of data management, software development, and user support across the team.

In this role you will manage the day-to-day running of Europe PMC and planning of future work and strategy. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in product management and familiarity with user-centred design tools and methods to achieve the best UX/UI. This includes planning and conducting user research to gather user needs, contributing to design reviews as well as Agile methodologies.

Your role

This is a broad role which will cover the following:Line management

  • Direct line management of staff
  • Support the Tech lead in managing technical staff
  • Participate and take a lead in recruitment activity
  • Deputise for the Team Leader

UX/UI

  • Develop analytics strategy and implement analytics on the site and with the Senior UX Designer and Researcher and implement processes to analyse and utilise the data
  • Track user research and insights that feed into the product vision and strategy, suggesting adjustments to the product roadmap and strategy according to user feedback
  • Plan and run user research studies 
  • Contribute to design reviews to provide feedback on interface designs, user journeys and prototypes
  • Conduct surveys of the product and analyse/present the data, including the annual website survey

Day to Day

  • Day-to-day running of the Europe PMC services
  • Plan and agree development with Technical Lead
  • Coordinate service development with outreach, user research, and helpdesk activities
  • Oversee projects and manage task and backlogs via tools such as Jira, GitLab and Trello using agile methodology and promoting open source code development
  • Setup up new projects, brief project teams, lead projects as required, develop and improve project processes and facilitate the weekly project meetings
  • Prioritise UX and development work in line with the product vision and strategic objectives, in conjunction with other team leads.
  • Maintain the quarterly product roadmap and resource plan
  • Lead the ongoing improvement of product development processes and development of guidance and best practice
  • Develop an overview of the operational context of Europe PMC services

Other activities

  • Coordinate reporting to Europe PMC Funder committee and Scientific Advisory Board
  • Participate in grant writing
  • Represent Europe PMC, at workshops, meetings and conferences

You have

  • Degree level or qualification and/or hands on experience of product management, UX or a related discipline
  • Product management and product ownership, including gathering understanding needs and requirements, writing user stories, developing and
    managing a product roadmap and maintaining and prioritising product backlogs
  • Working collaboratively with UX researchers and designers
  • Working with development teams, using Agile methodologies
  • Leading and managing projects
  • Defining product and UX metrics and using web analytics tools to collect usage and behavioural data
  • Managing team members including mentoring
  • Ability to write clear user stories and requirements for development and UX teams
  • Familiarity with web technologies and able to work closely with technical teams to define technical solutions
  • Understanding of UX processes, including planning and conducting user research, designing user flows and wireframes, rapid prototyping and validation/testing

  • Excellent communication skills, able to engage with senior stakeholders and external collaborators 
  • Experience of sharing work and presenting at professional workshops, conferences or events
  • Experience of producing written communications for different audiences for example project reports, grant applications, web content and blog posts
