The Role

The Student Success Unit is responsible for developing and supporting the delivery of an outstanding and distinctive student experience so that students have a high-quality University experience. As part of Student Success, the Student Life Team supports communication and engagement with current students and focuses on improving the student experience across the institution.

Communicating with our students has never been more important. As part of the Student Communications, Engagement and Integration team you will work with the Senior Manager for Student Communications and Engagement as well as the Head of Student Life managing a small team of colleagues to deliver joined up cohesive and engaging communications to all students on behalf of the Student Success Unit as well as supporting the coordination and delivery of wider student services and university messaging.

You will also oversee the delivery of student and employer facing events across the unit.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct and commission market research with students and other key stakeholders and customers and analyse and disseminate the outcomes in order to identify priorities for marketing and communications actions.  The research also informs product and service development discussions and decisions
  • To lead, develop, plan, implement and evaluate a range of marketing and communications campaigns and activities – including events and use of new media – to enable the Student Success Unit to achieve its strategic objectives
  • Manage the recruitment, training and development of the Student Communications Team – an annually recruited team of student workers – and provide direction for their work
  • To manage, develop and evaluate a calendar of events for the Student Success Unit including events relating to Careers, Lifelong Learning and Student Life
  • To support marketing and communications projects across Student Services including the development of student facing webpages for all services
  • To support the analysis and interpretation of communications related data, identify trends and testing solutions, source additional related information where appropriate, and report on progress, to support better engagement and more effective delivery of services to students
  • To support the creation and sharing of up to date and comprehensive guidance on effective messaging to students to keep the University’s brand identity and values consistent across all student-facing communications
  • To work in partnership with Marketing (social media and CRM teams) and other stakeholders to monitor, report on and interpret analytics relating to different student-facing engagement, with a view to delivering continuous improvement in our communication with students
  • Develop and maintain a high level of awareness of relevant activities, benchmarking, good practice, policy matters and trends within Higher Education concerning student communications and events to inform new developments
  • To undertake other duties as required and commensurate with the grade and responsibility of the post

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Relevant management experience
  • Experience of delivering cross-functional projects
  • Experience of communicating effectively with students and managing the delivery of outstanding student communications and events
  • The ability to work effectively within and across teams
  • Outstanding written communication skills
  • A high level of intercultural sensitivity and experience of promoting a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion
  • The ability to manage and prioritise a complex workload and use own initiative appropriately
  • Strong interpersonal skills including negotiating, influencing and relationship-building with colleagues and students including those with whom you have no direct line management
  • Well-developed knowledge and awareness of Higher Education in particular communications, engagement and event management in this context
  • Flexible and adaptable attitude in the workplace
  • Experience of delivering innovative solutions and contributing to team planning
  • Ability to analyse, understand and interpret data, and act upon insight
  • Must have recent HE University experience

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional qualification plus experience in a similar role or significant vocational experience demonstrating development through progressively more demanding, relevant roles
