Project: Long read sequencing for non-coding RNAs and RNA-based therapeutics

Commitment & contract: collaboration contract, duration: 24 months

Location: CHT Genova

ABOUT US

At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarters are strictly interconnected with the other 11 centers around Italy and two outstations based in the US. We promote excellence in basic and applied research such as neuroscience and cognition, humanoid technologies and robotics, nanotechnology, materials for a truly multidisciplinary scientific experience.

YOUR TEAM

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where molecular biologist, genomic technologists and computational scientists collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research.

The Non-coding RNAs and RNA-based therapeutics Research line is coordinated by Prof. Stefano Gustincich, with a well established academic record in the field of the functional genomics of non-coding RNAs, and the project will co-supervised by Dr. Luca Pandolfini, who has extensive experience in long read sequencing.

The study involves the analysis of a large collection of human genomes and transcriptomes sequenced with Oxford Nanopore Technology to identify structural variants and to profile RNA dynamics.

Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • To apply and develop innovative approaches to the analysis of Oxford Nanopore sequencing data (including DNA, cDNA and direct RNA datasets).
  • To manage large amount of sequencing data and set up the pipeline and software infrastructure required for the study

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Physics, Computer science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Documented experience with Oxford Nanopore sequencing data and related software tools is an essential requirement, together with a good proficiency in R and Python
  • A strong background in (molecular) biology
  • Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate are essential
  • A strong publication record
  • The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data
  • Good command in spoken and written English

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Skills in the management of -omic datasets, and in the development of analysis pipelines with container systems (e.g. Docker, Singularity) and workflow management engines (e.g. Nextflow, Snakemake) are strongly desirable.
  • Expertise in machine learning algorithms and platforms (e.g. TensorFlow, Keras) as well as in GPU computing (e.g. CUDA)
  • Strong problem solving attitude
  • High motivation to learn
  • Spirit of innovation and creativity
  • Good in time and priority management
