Course description: Students work in teams to design plants for the chemical and process industries and examine their economic viability. Lectures concern the details of process equipment and design.

Estimated TA support: TA consultation will be available from partner engineering courses as required. 

Estimated course enrolment: Approximately 100 students. 

Class schedule: Students attend 1 two-hour lecture and 2 three-hour tutorials per week. The final schedule is to be confirmed. 

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022 

Hours: 1 HCE (up to a maximum of 230 hrs) 

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 – $8,489.67; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term – $8,869.25; Sessional Lecturer 2 – $9,085.58; and Sessional Lecturer 3 – $9,301.90. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail. 

Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. 

Preferred Qualifications: include a familiarity with engineering communication practices, experience as an instructor in Chemical Engineering, familiarity with the specific needs of CHE, and a strong working relationship with its faculty. 

Description of duties:  Communication Instruction under the CHE portfolio with a particular focus on CHE430: 

  • developing and delivering lecture and workshop materials 
  • attending weekly teaching team meetings 
  • providing feedback on plant design reports and presentations at various stages 
  • advising on assessment tools  
  • grading individual and group assignments 
  • consulting with students (individually and in groups) 
  • having the ability to convert to online duties if required
