Course description: Praxis III is the capstone course of the Engineering Science Foundation Design sequence and challenges students to apply the models of engineering design, communication, teamwork, and professionalism introduced and developed in Praxis I and II to the design and testing of a functioning product prototype. The course requires students to integrate the design, technical, and complementary knowledge gained across the Engineering Science Foundation in the context of a single, major, full-term design project.

Estimated TA support: None for the position, but you will be training and coordinating a large number of course TAs in order to deliver communication support for the course.  

Estimated course enrolment: 250-280 

Class schedule: Winter tentative schedule, Lectures Monday 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM, Wednesday 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM, Friday 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM; Tutorials, Tuesdays 12-2pm, 1-3pm, 3-5pm, 4-6pm; Wednesday 4-6pm; Practicals, Thursday 12-2pm, 1-3pm; Friday 1-3pm; 3-5pm; 4-6pm.   

Dates of appointment: September 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023 

Hours: 1.6 HCE (0.6HCE Fall 2022, 1HCE Winter 2023) 

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 – $8,489.67; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term – $8,869.25; Sessional Lecturer 2 – $9,085.58; and Sessional Lecturer 3 – $9,301.90. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail. 

Minimum Qualifications:  include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. 

Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level, and familiarity with engineering communication practices, and strong performance as an instructor in Praxis I or II. Flexible availability for studio and benchmarking meetings is also preferred. 

Description of duties:  

  • contributing to course development, redesign, and planning 
  • attending and giving selected lectures on engineering communication and instruction on communication deliverables throughout the term  
  • attending weekly course planning meetings (to be scheduled)  
  • assisting with studio prep, including developing lesson plans and other materials for dissemination to the larger group of instructors for communication learning objectives 
  • assisting with assignment design and assessment, including contributing to and developing rubrics, leading benchmarking meetings, and spot checking teaching team’s feedback 
  • supervising and mentoring teaching assistants in assessment of deliverables 
  • holding consultations with students / student groups to help them complete and improve their assignments, and develop as writers and presenters 
  • preparing communication components of weekly tutorials 
  • other duties related to planning and coordinating communication support for the course 
  • having ability to convert to online duties if required
