Course Number and Title: JPM400Y:SIMULATED BIOMEDICAL INCUBATOR CAPSTONE COURSE (200P)

Course Description: This course affords students an opportunity for research experience in a laboratory or applied pharmacology setting. Students will work under the supervision of a departmental mentor and will submit a final written assignment and oral presentation. Enrollment is limited and requires permission from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Students are expected to spend approximately 200 hours towards this project, but this will be project/supervisor dependent.

Schedule: Most Mondays 4-6, and student team experiments to be scheduled according to Teaching Laboratory and student member availability. ~7-10 hours per week.        

Sessional dates: September 8, 2022 – April 29, 2023

Salary: SL1: $5,659.78, SL1 LT: $5,912.83, SL2: $6,057.05, SL3: $6,201.26 (rates reflect remuneration for teaching 0.33 FCE)

Qualifications:

Desirable candidate characteristics are:

  • Demonstrated experience with enthusiastic mentoring and coaching of junior students
  • Project management (organization and responsibility)
  • Fiscal responsibility (budgets)
  • Demonstrated initiative and motivation
  • Interpersonal skills for the management of partnerships and collaborations with faculty members etc.
  • Current or completed PHD in biomedical sciences or related field

Ideally, candidates will have specific experience inside the Department of Teaching Labs, MSB.

Description of duties:

The central techniques for the current experiments are:

  • Mammalian cell culture (propagation of cell lines)
  • Expansion of plasmid DNA
  • Generation of stable cell lines
  • Western blots
  • Ultracentrifugation of organelles
  • Spectrophotometric assays (fluorescence), plate-based
  • Drug transporter (pharmacology) assays

Other duties include:

  • ordering research materials/expendables
  • overseeing UG team research projects

Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located. In-person teaching on St. George campus is required.
