Course Number and Title: PCL490H1S: Advanced Topics in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Drugs, Poisons, and Public Policy: The Role of Pharmacology & Toxicology in Policy-Making

Course Description: An opportunity to expand on innovative and unique topics in Pharmacology and Toxicology that are not already extensively addressed. The course will reveal the dynamic nature of the field and the diverse interests of our faculty. Students will be introduced to leading edge topics and research within the discipline of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Estimated Course Enrolment: 20

Estimated TA support: 48.5 hours

Schedule: Thursdays 15:00-17:00

Sessional dates: January 3, 2022 – April 29, 2022

Salary: SL1: $8,489.67, SL1 LT: $8,869.25, SL2: $9,085.58, SL3: $9,301.90 (rates reflect remuneration for teaching 0.5 FCE)

Qualifications: PhD or similar in Pharmacology or Toxicology or related field. Experience with developing and implementing policy at a local and broad level of government associated with drug and/or chemical exposure. Risk assessment and minimization also strongly desired. Experience working with diverse stakeholders associated with policy creation. Experience mentoring and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate students. Must be familiar with learning management platforms. Experience with media briefs and policy papers an asset. 

Description of duties: (may include but are not limited to)

Develop and implement fourth year course in Pharmacology and Biomedical Toxicology that focuses on policy associated with drug use and/or exposure to chemicals. Work with Departmental faculty and staff to develop course learning outcomes and assessments. Grading student written and oral assessments and leading students in critical evaluation and integrative skills. Providing feedback to students and calculating final grade based on the assessments. Mentoring students and organizing any guest lecturers associated with course.
