The Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen is a world-renowned research institute and part of the German Max Planck Society. The Genome Center Facility provides next generation sequencing (NGS) services and scientific advice to all inhouse groups and is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation (e.g., PacBio Sequel II, Illumina NextSeq 2000 and MiSeq, Agilent Femto Pulse). The Facility is seeking a committed individual for the job of a Facility Manager (f/m/d).

Job description

Your primary task is to assure the daily operation of the facility. You also advise users on their experimental workflows and coordinate instrument time. You will have the opportunity to engage in collaborative scientific projects in particular with regards to methods development.

Your tasks

  • Operation of NGS instruments and supervision of technical staff on NGS instruments
  • Instrument maintenance, chemistry and software updates, scientific troubleshooting
  • Experiment scheduling and coordination, including multiplexing and spiking
  • Documentation, reporting and consumables management
  • Assistance of users with project planning, user training with library preparations
  • Knowledge transfer of existing and novel NGS technologies and methods
  • Development of innovative and customized NGS applications

Your qualifications

  • PhD or university degree in the areas of biology/biotechnology/chemistry and 3+ years of work experience with NGS applications
  • Expertise in molecular biology and NGS technology is required
  • Hands-on experience with NGS instruments and software is preferred
  • Experience in laboratory organization and/or management is preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills and a strong commitment to user projects
  • Curiosity to explore and push technological limits
  • Ability to work independently and to maintain clear and detailed records
  • Fluency in English is required, and fluency in German is desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Contract

The position is available immediately. Candidates from outside of the Max Planck Society will be offered an initial contract of two years. Salary and benefits are based on the German TVöD guidelines (TVöD Bund).
