The Role

This is a national role and the post sits in our exciting initiative, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Innovation Observatory (IO). Using next generation digital analytics, we bring together expertise to observe and report on health innovation for the UK and beyond, helping shape future health provision.

The Innovation Observatory is a £27M initiative, funded by NIHR, based at Newcastle University. We bring together data scientists, text mining and evidence synthesis experts, and information specialists, to provide an essential service for the NHS and policymakers. Our outputs help them make informed decisions about how healthcare should be provided in the future. 


This is a Full Time, Fixed Term post for 24 months.

We are looking for an experienced relationship manager to support our project delivery with our national stakeholders. The manager will develop and provide oversight on the organising and efficient delivery of projects to stakeholders such as the Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC), NHS England (NHSE), MHRA, DHSC and UK Health Security Agency. Maintaining an open dialogue the post holder will be the point of contact for a number of stakeholders, ensuring that their needs and requirements are fed into the IO planning and Senior Management Team. The role will also support the research leads, evidence synthesis and horizon scanning researchers and analysts to deliver projects in an efficient manner, and transparently communicating project progress to the stakeholder and IO team.

Key Accountabilities

  • Act as the main point of contact for IO stakeholders on a day-to-day basis, communicating clearly across external and internal teams
  • To evidence the progress and impact on delivering to our stakeholder needs, IO’s key performance indicators and the IO vision
  • Prepare detailed project timelines and milestones, monitoring progress on a continuous basis, with a clear understanding of any impact on the critical path
  • Actively manage project progress, working with IO research leads to feed into workload planning and resource management
  • Ensure the early identification of potential risks to meeting required objectives and coordinate the development of plans to recover the situation where possible, keeping the senior management team fully appraised throughout
  • Organise regular project update meetings, maintaining appropriate communication the stakeholders and ensuring actions are created in line with the project objectives/timeline.  Ensure agreed actions are undertaken by those assigned responsibility
  • Establish, organise and contribute to project management groups as required to support the project lead and IO senior management team
  • Develop an understanding of the IO stakeholders’ remit and priorities to support scientific, regulatory and technical elements of the project
  • Manage the relationship with the IO Stakeholders’ and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements
  • Take responsibility for identifying own learning needs, including identifying appropriate courses to ensure up to date knowledge in the funding streams available to support translational research, as well as developing an awareness of the regulations governing clinical research and research data

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Advanced knowledge of project management and relevant business operating procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and verbally
  • Experience of establishing and maintaining stakeholder/customer relationships in a project management space
  • A proven ability to manage projects to defined deliverables and meet audit requirements
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent financial management skills
  • Excellent IT skills, including competent use of Microsoft Office 365 and relevant project management tools/packages

Qualifications

  • 1st degree (or equivalent professional qualification) in a relevant discipline or significant experience of working in a project management role
