At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology a position as Assistant Professor in Industrial Design is open for appointment from November 1st, 2022 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of three years. The Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrate creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology, and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Industrial Design Section and the Design Lab research group is focusing on the role of design in the societal transition to a more sustainable production and consumption. We believe that design and design expertise play a critical role in making the sustainable choice the desirable and preferred choice for users, organisations and in society. We are currently working in three themes of research to support the mission. First, through the “Designed to last” theme we are investigating the longevity of products as a mean to slow down the consumption cycle. Second, through the “Design Expertise” theme we are expanding and dissecting the professional competence elements of designers. Third, through “Design Experiments” we create interdisciplinary experiments together with stakeholders and partners that will expand our understanding of the impact and value of design.

The research and teaching environment is dynamic and team-oriented, with a strong culture of collaboration between colleagues. We are looking an Assistant Professor that will join this collaborative team and the Design Lab research group and has keen interest in the mission to make design relevant in the transition to sustainability. The applicant is expected to provide a brief description of the applicant’s vision, aspiration, and direction for research. As well as past research experience and collaborative network projects. Applicants are also encouraged to outline any experience with concrete product development through design engineering disciplines. We are looking for applicants that can bridge and integrate design and engineering.

Teaching

Teaching activities include lecturing, supervision, coordination and planning at bachelor and master level. Predominantly Industrial Design and occasionally teaching design in other programs. Experience with problem based learning and supervising project work will be preferred.  

Proficiency in English is a requirement. Proficiency in Danish is an advantage but not a prerequisite. However, as courses at the bachelor level are offered in Danish, we expect that you become capable of teaching in Danish after a few years.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

  • Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications.
  • A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
  • References/recommendations.

Shortlisting will be applied. After the review of any objections regarding the assessment committee, the head of department, with assistance from the chair of the assessment committee, selects the candidates to be assessed. All applicants will be informed as to whether they will advance to assessment or not.
